There have been times I've waited years for ESRI to respond to a support request and with the advancement of webmapping services it's hard to make an argument for buying their bloatware. IMO, ArcGIS is the most bloated, cumbersome and overpriced geospatial tool on the planet and there are much better tools available, many of them open source, that work better, even have better support (because they're open). OP wasn't asking for a GIS suite, he/she was asking how to transform a simple geospatial polygon. I never said GDAL was meant to make a map, it's used to manipulate spatial data but it can do so much more. USGS uses many different tools and for geodetic transformations I've yet to find an alternative that works as efficiently, quickly or more accurately than GDAL, and I've been using it since 1995 (when Frank wrote it). I'll reiterate that I've only used OpenGIS, QGIS, and ArcGIS to create presentations, but I don't see anything related to GDAL being the end-user product beyond converting survey data. Can it do things like compose map data to a page, add a map key, north line, scale, etc. I don't see anywhere that GDAL is meant to make a map. I'm sure something like OpenGIS or QGIS are workable, but in my experience they were simply not as good as ArcGIS. When I said "A GIS suite, whether it's ArcGIS or something else." you appear to have read that as "ESRI's ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro are the only GIS products available" Please accept my apologies as that's not what I meant. I'm annoyed at the shitty snarkyness of your post, but I'm genuinely interested to know what you use at the Survey. Maybe you're confusing a GDAL window built-in to the rest of your workflow. What specific piece of software do you use at USGS? I ask because GDAL stands for "Geospatial Data Abstraction Library" and a library (I can't format that link correctly) isn't the same as an entire piece of software.
